Introduction
Rockman EXE 4.5 Real Operation is the only MegaMan Battle Network on the GBA that's still off-limits to English players. There was already a pretty cool partial translation patch by Spikeman, but I wanted the whole game in English. So I set out to make a translation patch on my own. This is the result!

I decided to hold off on announcing the patch until all the menus and other important things were translated, seeing as they were things I could do on my own or with help from a few friends, but the story is an entirely different story. So I'm looking for dedicated translators. Scroll down for the details!

The goal is to produce a faithful localization. That is, faithful to the other official English MegaMan Battle Network games. I want this to be as close to an official translation as it can get. So no Rockman, Blues or Forte. Sorry!

Features

  • Open source. Kinda.
  • Pretty much all graphics translated.
  • Variables like chip names/descriptions, enemy names, locations etc. translated. This should let you fight battles without a problem.
  • A brand-spanking new title screen!
  • A new name input screen with a bunch of special characters like EX/SP.
  • Several bugs in the game have been fixed. This gets rid of some graphical issues and crashes on some emulators. Try using GutsMan's chip in No$gba!
  • Optional 24-hour clock and DD-MM-YYYY date notation as separate patches.
  • Battle Chip Gate Navis are unlockable normally. StarMan is available from the start, and you unlock a new Navi each time you defeat Bass with a different Navi.

Helping out
I've got all bases covered, except translation. So I'm looking for people willing to translate who:
- Are, preferably, MMBN/RMEXE fans (have played the games, etc.);
- Can spot subtle differences in Japanese text (not just get the gist of it).
Don't worry if your English isn't very good! More important is whether you can convey the meaning and feeling of the Japanese text.

As for the technical aspects of translating, I've made a specialized script editor for EXE 4.5 that will handle things like control commands and re-pointing so it's no problem if the translated text is longer than the original. It's pretty bare-bones right now, so if there's a feature you need let me know.

Notes/Known issues

  • When starting from an existing Japanese save file, your names and scheduled events are probably messed up. I would advise fixing them first thing you do. Similarly, using a save file produced by the translation patch with the Japanese game will also mess up your names and scheduled events.
  • A lot of text shows as random gibberish. This is because the font graphics had to be replaced in order to use lowercase characters and stretch the name input length limits.
  • Some menus use MegaMan's mugshot for all Navis. This is because Navi-specific text isn't translated yet.
  • When using the 24-hour-clock patch, your Navi might state the time in AM/PM.

Oh my god, this is so amazing.
It really looks like an officially translated Battle Network game!
Congratulations! I can't really help translating from Japanese, my Japanese is VERY, very basic, but I wish you luck! I hope you can find a good translator soon!

DUDE

I--

DUDE

...JUST, DUDE.

SO

Will this 4.5 be able to battle BN4? Or EXE4, for that matter? xD EDIT EDIT: DUDE THE CHIP GATE WILL IT PLAY NICE WITH THE GATE

Man, you really DID get all the graphics... the speech bubbles in the HP comp, the ATK+, geez. xD Menu work's a work of art! How long have you been fiddling on this in secret, huh? xD

EDIT: Oh hey appeal to people who speak Japanese. I'd love to throw my hat into that ring-- I can infer a bit more than the average reader, especially personality-wise-- but there's no way I'm multitasking OSS while I'm still struggling with Romhacking 101. As much as I'd love to-- I put down my own JunkMan 4.5 playthrough when I got started on OSS-- unless I'm the only free hand in town, OSS really needs my all.

It's an awfully political kind of thing for me to say, isn't it? >>;;;

GODDAMN

We give medals for this kind of thing, right? Can we just preemptively give Prof a Lifetime Achievement in Awesomeness Award? Because, I mean, this speaks for itself.

Yeah, its an accomplishment alright. Judging by the your comments, I bet the full thing you guys will be spamming the forum XD.

I don't think he's been working on it for a year though.. That's WAY too long just for this stuff.

Nice! This is amazing!
I think you made English user happy. Because BN4.5 is Japanese only.

Yeah, you have your own patch to busy yourself with. Don't worry about it.

Well, I have been working on this thing on and off pretty much. I also had TextPet to work on (remember how I had to rework the entire thing a couple of times? <_<).

Now as for the questions...

I haven't really looked into that yet. EXE 4.5 can battle EXE 4 out of the box, but it's kind of tricky to emulate because you can only battle with EXE 4 in Operation Battle mode, and for that you need to hook up a Chip Gate. I'll look into it though. That said, the "Customizing..." and "Strat Change..." graphics that pop up in multiplayer battles are translated, so I think the only issue would be having it recognize an English BN4.

EDIT EDIT: DUDE THE CHIP GATE WILL IT PLAY NICE WITH THE GATE
Well, as far as I know I haven't done anything to break compatibility with the Chip Gate, so it should just work. With some help from Nigoli, I translated some graphics that only pop up when using the Chip Gate, such as "ACCEPTING NAVI DATA CHIP" on the Navi Select screen.

I have a question. Can it play in Secret Nabis?
For exemple: Forte, Shadowman, Iceman, Plantman...

Yep. It's in the feature list.

  • Battle Chip Gate Navis are unlockable normally. StarMan is available from the start, and you unlock a new Navi each time you defeat Bass with a different Navi.

Each time you defeat Bass with a new Navi, you unlock a secret Navi.

Oh, really? I thought I can't unlock a secret Navi.
Wow, great. I'm surprised at your answer. Thanks your project.

Hrm! Well, I've a buddy with BN4, and I've got me an EXE4.5 with a BCG. There's fixing what needs doing-- his GBA can't link, but we're working on it-- but if EXE4 in Ops mode can battle EXE4.5 in vanilla, then I'd be more than happy to experiment once my buddy an' I get that GBA of his fixed/replaced. Don't hold your breath. xD;;

I've been doing some poking around hardware-wise too, as you've seen. >>; This is an awkward question, but have you thought on any kind of RTC patch? This is obviously not a priority, and I have no idea if it's even feasible, but it'd get a lot of use from me among others. ^^;

Hmm, it kind of falls outside the scope of this project... but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a look. As far as I can see, the problem is that the clock is set to 0/0/00 0:00 if you don't have a real time clock. Maybe I can do something like those patches for Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire.

The big problem though, is how the only way to get to Bass is with all the chips, right? Between the daily virii changes (which limits chip intake), the limited hours for daily tournaments, and weekends being needed for the ranking tournaments (not to mention limited hours for signing up for those tournaments during the weekdays)...

You'd either need to make the RTC patch remove limited hours on signups and tourneys (which might get buggy with weekend tourney signups being on weekdays), or make a different RTC patch for each day of the week (with different times, to boot!). @__@

Looking at the Pokemon patches of the same ilk, I know that's not impossible or overly hard, but unless you've already know where to look for time/day business, the time it'd take to make those kind of patches might be better spent on the current scope of the project-- it's massive enough. xD
