Anyway, why a swarm of bees would scare you off already? Be a man! ...I would just put out the insect exterminator from out kitchen and spray at them. :O
You did not saw the size of those things, and how many of them too. =.=

Enough of anything will kill you.
When a bee stings you, it injects a chemical, which your body reacts to, causing the "lump"

If your body ingests enough of this, you can die.
Unless you are allergic though, you can get away with even 20 stings without anything but insane discomfort/agony

Bees usually look for a warm place to stay temporarily until they find a more suitable home, when changing hives. I guess you just got a little unlucky that day. Good deal nobody was severely hurt.
